OSHA’s Top 10 Most Frequently Cited Standards for 2024 (YTD)

2024 is winding down, but OSHA has already released its top 10 frequently cited standards for the fiscal year, covering data from October 1, 2023, to September 5, 2024. This preliminary list was unveiled at the National Safety Council Expo by the director of OSHA’s Directorate of Enforcement Programs.

Here’s the current ranking of the most cited violations:

  1. Fall Protection – General Requirements (1926.501): 6,307 violations
  2. Hazard Communication (1910.1200): 2,888 violations
  3. Ladders (1926.1053): 2,573 violations
  4. Respiratory Protection (1910.134): 2,470 violations
  5. Lockout/Tagout (1910.147): 2,443 violations
  6. Powered Industrial Trucks (1910.178): 2,248 violations
  7. Fall Protection – Training Requirements (1926.503): 2,050 violations
  8. Scaffolding (1926.451): 1,873 violations
  9. Personal Protective & Lifesaving Equipment – Eye and Face Protection (1926.102): 1,814 violations
  10. Machine Guarding (1910.212): 1,541 violations

While the top 10 list looks similar to 2023, there have been some notable changes. Respiratory Protectionhas jumped from seventh to fourth place, while Scaffolding dropped from fourth to eighth.

With this data, employers can take proactive steps to assess their workplace safety measures and ensure compliance with OSHA’s most cited standards. Staying compliant helps mitigate risks and improve workplace safety.
