1 on 1’s are a great tool to show you support your employees and their success within the company. This is a time for managers to sit down with their employees and check on their progress and set a plan for their career goals.
- Ask great questions
Employers should use this time to discuss career development with employees. Try asking questions along the lines of:
- What excites you most about your job?
- Any skills you would like to develop to further your career?
- What is one thing I could do as an employer to help you succeed?
- Focus on an agenda
Having an agenda in place for the 1:1 keeps the meeting on track to focus on creating a plan for the employees future and how they are going to achieve these goals. Also discuss with the employee a time where you can sit down and follow up on how their plan is going and if they are achieving what they had planned to achieve.
- Focus on the employee’s future
Use this time to give the employees a structured opportunity to discuss their future aspirations within the company.
Employees should be thinking about what they want to achieve and how they are going to get there.
Employers should be thinking about what skills the employee needs to improve on to achieve their career goals and what their most valuable contributions are.
